A Husband and Father’s Journey: My Conversation on the I Am A Dad Podcast

2024-12-09 | Post By: Dontaye Carter

Hey there, family and friends!

I’m thrilled to share something close to my heart—my recent appearance on Kenneth Braswell’s I Am A Dad podcast. If you’ve ever wanted a glimpse into my journey as a husband, father, and changemaker, this is the one to watch. You can check it out here.

Eight years ago, I took a leap of faith, leaving Tulsa, Oklahoma, for Atlanta with one goal: to marry the woman who captured my heart at a Valentine’s Day party. That night, as we danced, she joked about having two left feet. I told her, “I have two right feet. Let’s find our rhythm together.” That moment set the tone for our life—a dance filled with love, laughter, and purpose.

Since then, Karen and I have built a beautiful life together in Atlanta, raising our amazing daughter, Kyleigh. Every day, I’m reminded that the most important title I hold isn’t Founder of Carter Media Group, award-winning strategist, or activist—it’s husband and father.

The Heart of Fatherhood

Being a dad has taught me more about love and responsibility than I ever imagined. It’s about showing up, being present, and guiding our children with intention and care. On the I Am A Dad podcast, Kenneth and I talked about what it means to embrace fatherhood, especially as a Black man, and how our roles as fathers shape the next generation.

We explored:

  • The joy and challenges of being a father.
  • How intentional parenting strengthens the bond between dads and their kids.
  • The power of Black fatherhood in reshaping narratives and building stronger communities.

Why This Conversation Matters

Fatherhood isn’t just about being there; it’s about creating a legacy of love, respect, and empowerment. Black fathers are often overlooked in the narrative, yet we know the truth: Black fathers are present, engaged, and making a difference in their children’s lives every single day.

Through my work, whether it’s as an activist, a business owner, or an author of My Daddy and Me with Kyleigh, I’ve sought to amplify stories that matter. This podcast was a reminder of the importance of sharing our journeys—not just to inspire, but to uplift and encourage other dads to keep showing up.

A Thank You to Kenneth Braswell

Kenneth, thank you for giving me the space to share my story. Your platform is a beacon of light for fathers everywhere, reminding us of the beauty and responsibility that comes with being a dad.

To everyone who listens, I hope this conversation moves you, challenges you, and reminds you of the power of family.
