TBT: Celebrating Legacy and Freedom: The Third Annual One Fulton Juneteenth Celebration

2024-12-11 | Post By: Dontaye Carter

This year’s One Fulton Juneteenth Celebration at Sandy Springs Middle School was more than an event; it was a heartfelt tribute to history, community, and the unyielding spirit of freedom. Organized through a partnership between the Juneteenth Federation, the Atlanta NAACP, and the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP, this vibrant gathering united families and leaders to honor Juneteenth and Father’s Day in a powerful, meaningful way.

The celebration brought together a coalition of influential organizations, including the North Georgia Labor Council, North Fulton Georgia Labor Union, Dreamz Always Come True, The Link at North Springs, and several Georgia NAACP branches. It was a day filled with education, inspiration, and joy—a true embodiment of the values that Juneteenth represents.

A Day to Remember

Hosted by comedian Shuler King, the event was brimming with energy and engagement. Attendees enjoyed a range of activities, from an insightful history lesson on Juneteenth to a spirited Father-Son/Daughter Dance-Off. The day also featured a thought-provoking Voter Rights Panel, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Grammy Award-winning rapper, actor, and philanthropist Clifford "T.I." Harris graced the occasion with his presence, sharing words of encouragement and hope with the children in attendance. T.I.’s heartfelt connection with the community was evident as he posed for photos, interacted with attendees, and offered wisdom to young leaders, including Aiden from Aiden’s Wagon, a non-profit supporting Black children on the autism spectrum.

“Most people are subjected to what they’ve been exposed to. So I just want to offer myself as an example and be a beacon of light whenever I can,” T.I. remarked, highlighting the importance of inspiring the next generation.

Honoring History, Celebrating Progress

The historical significance of Juneteenth was at the heart of the event. Attendees were reminded that Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This moment in history is not just a milestone for Black Americans but a cornerstone of the broader American story.

NAACP Atlanta President Gerald Griggs spoke passionately about the day’s importance. “Juneteenth is a profound reminder of our journey from enslavement to emancipation, a testament to the resilience, faith, and freedom that define the African American experience,” Griggs said. “This year, as we gather at Sandy Springs Middle School, we honor the legacy of our ancestors and celebrate the vital roles of fatherhood and community in shaping our future.”

Another highlight was the recognition of Black soldiers’ contributions during the Civil War. This acknowledgment serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by African Americans to secure freedom and justice, shaping the course of history.

Icons in Attendance

The celebration also welcomed legendary screenwriter Eric Monte, known for creating beloved television classics like *Good Times*, *The Jeffersons*, and *What’s Happening!!*. Monte’s presence, alongside his family, underscored the event’s commitment to honoring pioneers who have made significant cultural contributions.

Jasmine Crisp, Monte’s granddaughter, expressed the importance of such moments. “Just having T.I., Eric Monte, and all the great talent that came out is important. Our kids need to see that,” she shared.

An Enduring Legacy

As the day concluded, the spirit of unity and shared purpose remained strong. Gerald Griggs captured this sentiment beautifully: “It is through unity and shared purpose that we continue to advance the cause of justice and equality for all. Let us embrace this day with joy, reflection, and a renewed commitment to the values that sustain us.”

The third annual One Fulton Juneteenth Celebration was not only a reflection of how far we’ve come but also a call to action for how much further we need to go. With leaders, artists, and community members joining forces, the event served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and brilliance that define the Black community.

As we look ahead, let us continue to honor Juneteenth’s legacy by building bridges across generations and fostering a future rooted in justice, equality, and freedom.
