Working-class individuals, who form the backbone of our economy, are being pushed to the margins. It is unconscionable that in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, people are choosing between paying rent and putting food on the table. This crisis demands immediate action, from capping rent increases to investing in affordable housing developments.
And yet, while the cost of living soars, wages have stagnated. The minimum wage has remained stagnant for years, failing to keep pace with inflation. This disparity is not just an economic issue; it is a justice issue. People deserve to earn a living wage that allows them to support their families and contribute to their communities with dignity.
Racism remains a persistent and insidious barrier to progress. It manifests in housing discrimination, wage gaps, and systemic inequalities that disproportionately affect communities of color. These are not isolated incidents but entrenched structures that require intentional dismantling.
At Carter Media Group, we use every platform available to advocate for policies that not only address these issues but also prioritize the people most affected by them. On Al Jazeera, I emphasized the need for leaders who are unafraid to challenge the status quo and advocate for bold, transformative change. This includes increasing the minimum wage, implementing rent control measures, and investing in education and housing initiatives that center equity.
My appearance on Al Jazeera was a reminder of the power of our collective voice. By shedding light on these issues, we can spark conversations that lead to action.
